About the Guidelines

These guidelines have been developed out of research that was undertaken at distance delivery sites in four Australian states. The research involved interviews with principals, with teachers, with learners, and with others considered significant in the language learning process. Expert teachers of language were also shadowed in order to assist in the compilation of an understanding of what constitutes ‘best practice’ in the distance delivery of languages.

The guidelines are presented here in a variety of ways. Critical dimensions are presented, in some instances through point or list form, and in others through the voices of those who participated in the research. They are also presented diagrammatically and through comparisons. It is hoped that this format enables the concise articulation of key ideas and elements, as well as enabling the capture of personal and professional feelings and perspectives that are important if best practice in the delivery of languages is to be truly understood and appreciated.
